Google’s new Pixel 11 puts Gemini at center of AI phone battle with Apple

Google's new Pixel 11 lineup of smartphones has brought about minimal hardware changes compared to last year's models, but they are packed with enhanced AI features thanks to the new Gemini technology. While the design remains similar, this year's devices incorporate innovative AI capabilities such as Wispr Flow-like transcription, live translation across content, and advanced camera features.

With Gemini, U.S.-based users can order groceries, book rides, or get coffee, and businesses can handle tasks like table reservations or appointments on their behalf.

Gemini can call businesses for table reservations or appointments, and users have the option to take over or halt the AI-operated tasks at any time, reviewing transcripts if needed. Google has also introduced an upgraded version of their "Magic Cue" feature, which uses Gemini to display contextual information from across apps, making suggestions for dinner spots or shows.

In May, Google unveiled its dictation product, Rambler, which is now integrated into Pixel phones. The new Pixel series offers additional handy features such as video, podcast, and voice message translation, as well as the ability to translate sign language into text for better communication with hearing-impaired individuals. The Pixel 11 series also introduces new camera features like "Magic Capture" that selects the best frames from hundreds of captured ones, along with faster capture and improved zoom capabilities.

Furthermore, Google has integrated Gemini into third-party apps like Granola, Otter.ai, Wix, Fever, Get Your Guide, Localiza, OpenTable (U.K.), Ticketmaster, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Angi, Thumbtack, and Zocdoc, allowing users to take advantage of AI-assisted functionality across various platforms. The Pixel 11 series is powered by the Tensor G6 processor, offering improved power efficiency and faster browsing speeds, along with better low-light photography and a new 120x magic zoom feature.

All Pixel phones share the same display size, but the Pro models boast a brighter display and an upgraded main camera sensor. The company has also added an LED indicator light on the back to signal calls or messages from favorite contacts when Gemini is active. The Pixel 11 series is available for pre-order starting today, with base storage options starting at 256GB and prices ranging from $899 for the Pixel 11, $1,099 for the Pixel 11 Pro, and $1,299 for the Pixel 11 Pro XL.
