Google’s Gemini hits one billion monthly users as AI war heats up

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 12 — Google's artificial intelligence assistant, Gemini, has reached a significant milestone by surpassing one billion monthly users, CEO Sundar Pichai announced on Tuesday. This achievement comes a week after a major restructuring of the company's AI division. Pichai noted on social media that Gemini is their fastest-growing product ever, marking the 14th product to reach this user count for Google.

The milestone highlights Google's strategic focus amidst an intensifying competition in the AI landscape. The calculation of this figure is based on the number of users engaging with Gemini across the company's various platforms. The move reflects Google's strategic positioning in the AI race, especially as they integrate AI across their ecosystem, from search and email to Google Maps and YouTube.

However, the absence of their flagship model, Gemini 3.5 Pro, since its initial promise in June, coupled with its rivals' faster model releases, particularly in generating coding solutions, puts Google at a strategic disadvantage. Despite these challenges, Google's user base remains a critical asset as they strive to embed AI into their services.

OpenAI's ChatGPT, leading the AI race with over one billion users across its platforms, had already showcased the potential of AI tools, launching in November 2022, and built its user base from zero within four years. The competition is evident as ChatGPT's market share for AI assistants dropped below 50% in the first half of the year, according to research firm Sensor Tower.

This shift underscores Google's need to accelerate its AI developments to maintain its competitive edge.
