Fembots, Animal Prints and Old Money: Inside the Costumes of ‘Margo’s Got Money Troubles’

In the Apple TV series "Margo's Got Money Troubles," Elle Fanning portrays the titular character, a young woman who becomes a single parent after discovering she is pregnant. To support her family, she creates the character of the Hungry Ghost, a green-skinned alien modeled after retro-futuristic fembots, and shares her experiences on OnlyFans.

The character's mother, Shyanne (played by Michelle Pfeiffer), and father, Jinx (played by Nick Offerman), both have a flair for dressing flamboyantly. This background influences Margo's style, as costume designer Mirren Gordon-Crozier explains that Margo understands the importance of visual impact. Margo's costume, the Hungry Ghost, was created on a limited budget and by the roommate's amateur sewing skills, resulting in a homemade appearance.

It is made of silver spandex, a clear vinyl miniskirt, and chunky boots adorned with moons and stars, found in a rave shop. Margo's OnlyFans mentors, played by Rico Nasty and Lindsey Normington, are depicted as cowgirls in pink lace bodysuits with bedazzled gun holsters and braided hair that reaches their waist. The series also features a mother-daughter dynamic, with Shyanne's animal print wardrobe echoing the theme throughout the characters.

Nicole Kidman plays Lace, ex-wrestler lawyer, sporting a vintage Dolce & Gabbana tiger-print dress, while Jinx wears leopard-print T-shirts and snakeskin pants. The costume design team aimed to tie the family's print motifs together, using vintage and eclectic fabrics to create a cohesive aesthetic. Even Jinx's home clothes, a faded Jinx tank top and T-shirts with loud, colorful patterns, reflect his wrestling background and Californian lifestyle.
