Eyipe’s sanitation crisis raises concerns over public health and coastal pollution

Residents of Eyipe, a community in Winneba, Central Region, are increasingly concerned over persistent sanitation challenges that have significant implications for public health and coastal pollution. Located near the sea, the community faces issues such as improper waste disposal, open defecation, and poor management of wastewater. These problems are particularly troubling due to the community's proximity to the shoreline, where rubbish is sometimes found and wastewater from households is discharged into open areas.

The sanitation situation has public health implications as well, with sanitation officer records detailing cases of cholera and diarrhoea, highlighting the increased risk of disease spread due to improper waste disposal and open defecation.

Wastewater from households, when discharged into open areas, further contaminates the environment, raising concerns about coastal pollution.
