Education is broader than science and maths – Perez Musik on NSMQ

Award-winning gospel musician Perez Musik contends that Ghana's education system should be more inclusive of disciplines beyond science and mathematics, asserting that the arts, fashion, culinary arts and other creative fields are equally vital to national progress. Addressing the fervor surrounding the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) on Joy Learning TV and Joy News, Perez Musik expressed skepticism over the country's overemphasis on science and mathematics to the detriment of other educational areas.

"The NSMQ is amazing. The whole euphoria around it is fine, but for me, I don’t really see the big deal about it," he remarked. According to Perez Musik, education encompasses a broad spectrum of disciplines that collectively contribute to a nation's advancement. "I believe that the education system is broad, and it’s just broader beyond science and maths alone.

The arts are there, the visual arts are there, and building a nation demands a combination of all these things," he elaborated. "So if we are just going to focus on boarding schools just for science and maths, what about the people in the fashion industry? What about the people in the visual arts and everything? What are we doing for them?" he inquired.

He advocated for a more supportive environment for young individuals with interests in creative and vocational sectors, emphasizing that these domains can offer lucrative career prospects. "Home economics, especially cooking, is a big deal right now. People are running restaurants and making a lot of money," he pointed out. "There are events happening every weekend across the country.

If you go to school and learn some of these things, event organization, publicity, I mean, I feel it’s broader," he added. Perez Musik thus called for a more holistic approach to education that acknowledges the value of various disciplines and career paths. "I think we should look at the broader picture," he concluded.
