Cursor To Open First India Office By 2026 End: Report

US-based AI coding company Cursor is set to open its first office in India by the end of this year, according to a recent report. "Over the course of the next five months, you will see us make some fairly significant go-to-market efforts in India," said Simon Green, Cursor's Asia-Pacific and Japan head. The company has begun hiring for remote roles, including AI deployment, partnership management, and field engineering, with many of these roles based in the Greater Bengaluru region.

This move comes as global AI players are strengthening their presence in India. Recently, Cursor introduced a new India-only subscription plan, Cursor Start, priced at ₹649 per month. India is Cursor's third-largest market globally, with its user base tripling to over 3 million developers within the past year. The company's expansion into India aims to tap into the high concentration of power users of its platform in the country.

As competition intensifies in the coding and AI space, other major players like OpenAI and Anthropic are also expanding their operations in India. OpenAI announced plans to open offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, claiming over 100 million weekly ChatGPT users in the country. Anthropic recently opened its first office in Bengaluru, noting that India is now the second-largest market for its AI assistant Claude.

Local player Sarvam is also vying for a share of the market with its new AI coding agent, Sarvam Code, and is building a trillion-parameter frontier AI model in India.
