Could the 2031 Women’s World Cup be coming to N.J.? State says it’s open to it

New Jersey is considering hosting the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup at MetLife Stadium, according to the state’s Sports and Exposition Authority. The authority, responsible for the venue that hosted eight matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup including the final on July 19, has expressed openness to the idea, though no official commitment has been made, a spokesperson for Governor Mikie Sherrill told NorthJersey.com.

"This summer proved what we already knew: New Jersey is a premier destination for the world’s biggest events," said Sherrill’s spokesperson, Maggie Garbarino. The previous World Cup was criticized for logistical challenges, such as lengthy commutes for fans and FIFA’s insistence on renaming the stadium "New York New Jersey Stadium" for the duration of the tournament.

Garbarino emphasized that any future agreement must recognize New Jersey's value and deliver the best deal for residents. The 2031 Women’s World Cup is expected to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Jamaica, with FIFA set to officially announce the host nations in November. The exact dates for the tournament have not been disclosed yet.
