Cheslyn Daniels' mayoral bid in doubt after arrest

Cheslyn Daniels, the Cape Town mayoral candidate for the Patriotic Alliance (PA), faced criticism after his arrest and subsequent appearance in Bellville Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. Daniels, along with his wife Deveney, who also faces charges, expressed their relief at being released on bail. However, the PA's leader, Gayton McKenzie, cast doubt on Daniels' campaign following the incident.

At the court, a prosecutor mentioned the involvement of a minor child, though the State did not oppose the couple's release on bail. Daniels, 33, stands charged with contravening a protection order and common assault, while his wife faces a charge of common assault. The defence argued that Daniels and his wife were previously married and share a minor child. According to the defence, a dispute arose during their visit to a function, leading to the altercation involving the child.

The defence stressed that the incident was emotionally charged and not premeditated, emphasizing that Daniels held an interim protection order against his wife. Deveney's lawyer confirmed she had no prior criminal record. Daniels was granted R1000 bail, while his wife received R500 bail. The court ordered both to refrain from contacting the complainant and postponed the case until September 21.

McKenzie, the PA leader, stated that the national executive committee (NEC) will determine whether Daniels remains the party's mayoral candidate. McKenzie emphasized that family issues should not impact the party's election campaign, particularly during the crucial period leading up to the local government elections. The PA leader encouraged professional help for all parties involved and promised to show support during their darkest hour.
