‘Cherish being Malayali’: CPM’s John Brittas snaps after ‘lungi wala’ slur

Rajya Sabha experienced a heated confrontation on Wednesday when CPM’s John Brittas accused BJP MP Sushmita Dev of using a derogatory term, "lungi wala," during parliamentary proceedings. To address the issue, Chairman C P Radhakrishnan summoned both members to his chamber. In response, Dev approached the Chair to voice her side of the story. The Chairman emphasized the need for decorum and respect for regional sensitivities, prompting the House to be adjourned until 2 pm.

Brittas firmly defended his Malayali identity and criticized the use of stereotypes in parliamentary discourse. "I cherish every moment being Malayali," he stated. Alleging that Dev repeatedly interrupted him while he was reading a resolution against a Bill, Brittas claimed that the House should take a stance on the matter. Leader of the House J P Nadda acknowledged the allegations and urged Dev to be given a chance to speak, distancing the government from the offensive comments.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju reiterated that every member is equal in the House, emphasizing the importance of maintaining dignity.

The Chair issued a formal observation on the matter, highlighting the need for members to be mindful of the sentiments of their fellow colleagues and the inclusive nature of the country's culture. Brittas' comments sparked support from Opposition MPs, leading to demands for Mallikarjun Kharge to be permitted to address the House as well. The confrontation unfolded as listed papers were presented on the table, marking the start of the Upper House's proceedings on Wednesday.
