Chelsea sign defender Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano on five-year contract

Chelsea has signed Spanish left back Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano on a five-year contract, according to the Premier League club. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but British media reported that Chelsea paid an initial £16.3 million ($22.02 million) with additional £1.7 million in add-ons for the 28-year-old.

Chavarria expressed his excitement about joining Chelsea, stating that it is a dream come true for him as it is one of the biggest clubs in the world. He acknowledged it as a significant opportunity and emphasized his commitment to working hard to help the team achieve success.

The Spanish defender previously played for lower-tier Spanish clubs Figueres, Olot, and Zaragoza before joining Rayo Vallecano in 2022. During his time at Rayo Vallecano, Chavarria made 125 appearances in all competitions and played a crucial role in the team's run to the UEFA Conference League final last season. His signing enhances the options of Chelsea's new manager Xabi Alonso at the left back position, following the departure of Spaniard Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid.

Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season and will commence their new campaign against London rivals Fulham on August 24.
