CBS has clearly signaled Tony Romo's future in his $180 million broadcast contract while reshuffling its NFL broadcasting team following his arrest. Romo is currently on indefinite leave but remains on the network's payroll. To fill the void left by his absence, J.J. Watt, previously the No. 2 analyst alongside Ian Eagle, has been promoted to the top booth alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.

This move has left an opening, which Ross Tucker is set to fill alongside Ian Eagle and Evan Washburn. Tucker and Eagle have a strong on-air chemistry from their collaboration on Westwood One radio. Their new pairing will debut on Sept. 13 when the Green Bay Packers face the Minnesota Vikings. CBS Sports President David Berson emphasized the importance of focusing on the presentation and quality of the product rather than any external factors, including Romo's situation.

Tucker's promotion to the No. 2 team signals a full-season adjustment rather than a temporary fix. Romo's contract with CBS, signed in 2020, has four years remaining. If CBS decides to terminate the contract due to Romo's arrest, they would likely face a settlement rather than a clean break. Romo's court date for his Wisconsin arrest is scheduled for Sept. 21, and CBS is moving forward without waiting for his resolution.
