Captain of high school baseball team banned for trash talk embraces lessons learned

The captain of Pai Chai High School's baseball team, who was recently banned for insensitive trash talk, reflected on the importance of understanding the impact of words and actions. The school resumed competition on August 12th by participating in the Bonghwang National High School Baseball Tournament at Mokdong Stadium in Seoul.

The team had previously faced a one-month suspension after players made derogatory chants during a game against Gwangju Jeil High School. These chants were linked to a controversial Starbucks Korea promotion, which had offended many with its perceived mockery of the 1980 Gwangju pro-democracy uprising. The Korea Baseball Softball Association initially imposed a six-month ban, but the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee reduced it to one month on July 20th.

At the tournament, Pai Chai lost to Incheon High School 8-5 after allowing three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Captain Ko Hyun-seok, who played left field and batted cleanup, acknowledged that he and his teammates had learned a valuable lesson about the consequences of their actions. Despite the setback, the team expressed regret for their loss, apologized to Gwangju Jeil High School, and visited the National Cemetery in Gwangju to pay respects to the victims of the pro-democracy movement.
