Bunkpurugu Police ban gunshots at funerals and public events over safety concerns

The Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District Police Command in Ghana has temporarily halted the firing of muskets and other gunshots at funerals and public events in the Bunkpurugu Township. This decision was made following a letter signed by the District Police Commander, ASP Emmanuel Kofi Sintim, on August 11, 2026. The command cited growing concerns over public safety, accidental shootings, loss of lives, and the current security situation in the area as the reasons behind this directive.

While acknowledging that musketry is a part of the cultural tradition in the region, the police emphasized the need for restraint to protect lives during such events. As of now, the firing of gunshots at funerals has been suspended with immediate effect, and the command has urged traditional authorities, families, and the general public to comply with this order.

Those found using or possessing firearms in violation of the directive are warned that they will face arrest and prosecution. The police are relying on traditional leaders and the media to help communicate this temporary ban to the public, and it is expected to remain in place until further notice.
