Brazil orders Discord to suspend livestreams after teen’s death

Brazil's National Data Protection Agency (ANPD) has ordered Discord to suspend live streaming and video-sharing features in the country, citing the platform's inability to protect children and adolescents from violence and coercion. The company has three days to comply with the preventive order, which will remain in place until Discord demonstrates measures to protect users.

The agency launched an investigation into Discord following a 13-year-old girl's suicide on July 22 during a live broadcast on the platform. The incident was one of several cases of violence and coercion against minors on Discord, prompting Operation Lívia, a police-led crackdown involving multiple states. The ANPD identified structural failures in Discord's implementation of safety measures, primarily due to the platform's technical architecture, which prevents real-time detection of audiovisual content.

Discord maintains that it has cooperated with Brazilian authorities and reported individuals to law enforcement, contributing to successful arrests. The company reaffirmed its commitment to user safety and expressed hope for continued dialogue with policymakers to promote a safer online environment.
