Board shake-up at Vodacom

South Africa's leading mobile network operator, Vodacom, has made significant changes to its board of directors. Chairman Saki Macozoma is set to retire and be replaced by Khumo Shuenyane, who currently serves as the lead independent director. The transition will take effect at the upcoming annual general meeting on 20 July 2027.

Vodacom expressed gratitude to Macozoma for his leadership and contributions since 2017, when he joined the board. The company also announced that Phuthi Mahanyele-Dabengwa, CEO of Naspers South Africa, will step down from the board on 8 October. Mahanyele-Dabengwa, who served on the remuneration and nomination committees, has been with the board since January 2019.

Vodacom thanked her for her significant contributions and wished her success in future endeavors. To fill the vacancy, Segun Ogunsanya has been appointed as an independent non-executive director, effective 9 October. With over 35 years of experience in various sectors, Ogunsanya previously served as CEO and managing director of Airtel Africa, a multinational telecommunications and financial services company operating in 14 African countries.

He also held key positions at Coca-Cola Hellenic, Ecobank, and JSE-listed fintech entity Optasia. Vodacom confirmed that a fit and proper assessment was conducted for Ogunsanya, who was deemed suitable for the role. Additionally, Clive Thomson will take over as chairman of the remuneration committee, effective 9 October, while continuing to chair the audit, risk, and compliance committee.
