Bengals Newcomer Will Make or Break Club’s Season

The Cincinnati Bengals, ailing in their defense last season, are in desperate need for a turnaround to be relevant again. Their total defense ranked 31st in the league with an average of 380.9 yards allowed per game, and their opponent scoring was 30th, allowing 28.9 points per game. This prompted the Bengals' director of player personnel, Duke Tobin, to make significant improvements to their defensive line, with the acquisition of defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II possibly being the most crucial move.

Lawrence, a 28-year-old defensive tackle weighing 340 lbs, joined the Bengals for a two-year, $54 million contract, starting from 2025. He was also given a one-year, $28 million extension, running through 2028. The Bengals traded their No. 10 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft to the New York Giants in exchange for Lawrence and signed a deal to secure his services.

Boye Mafe, who won the Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks, was also acquired, while Jonathan Allen joined to play alongside "Sexy Dexy." The Bengals also bolstered their secondary by signing Bryan Cook, Kyle Dugger, and Ja’Sir Taylor. Lawrence's performance dipped significantly in the previous season, with fewer sacks, tackles for loss, and quarterback hits compared to the year before.

This could be attributed to the Giants' formidable defensive line, consisting of Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, Darius Alexander, and Kayvon Thibodeaux, but Lawrence is now expected to step up and deliver an exceptional performance in his new role as the face of Cincinnati's defense.
