Azri dismisses setbacks as Harimau Malaya prepare for Vietnam clash

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia goalkeeper Azri Ghani remains undeterred by the setbacks his team, Harimau Malaya, have faced as they gear up for the Asean Hyundai Cup semi-finals against Vietnam at the KLFA Stadium on Sunday. Various challenges, such as injuries, a condensed preparation period, and players' off-season status, have created obstacles for the team.

Azri, who has been Malaysia's leading goalkeeper in the tournament, has kept two clean sheets in four matches, conceding only three goals. These statistics, he believes, demonstrate a strong defensive unit that has accomplished more right than wrong, despite the disruptions caused by injuries.

Azri expressed his credit for the team's best performances in all four matches, stating that there are no problems or issues with the defending or the players' fitness. Despite the absences of Endrick Dos Santos and Jimmy Raymond, and other players working back to fitness, Azri remains confident that the senior team can make the most of the available players. He hopes the injured players can return quickly for the next match, potentially against Vietnam.

The conditions surrounding Malaysia's campaign have been far from ideal. The Asean Cup is being played outside the FIFA international window, and the squad has been given only around 10 days to prepare. This has forced interim coach Tan Cheng Hoe to work with a group of youngsters and newcomers, while players have arrived from their clubs with limited time to build team unity.

Azri acknowledges these circumstances but sees the team's progress to the semi-finals as a testament to the players' commitment, especially given the off-season timing. He expressed his pride and excitement in the players' condition and readiness, stating that he hopes they can give their best performance against Vietnam and fight in the next match.
