At 71, Jamaludin still has one big jump on his mind

At 71, experienced base jumper Jamaludin Ismail remains as enthusiastic about his sport as ever. Since beginning skydiving in 1980, he has pursued base jumping, leaping from structures and natural features, for more than four decades. At 71, he harbors a dream of jumping from Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, should the chance and sponsorship arise.

The Johor-born former military engineer claims to have completed around 6,000 recorded jumps, though the actual number could be as high as 10,000. His military background provided the discipline and technical skills necessary for the sport. His highest jump reached 7,620m, requiring the use of oxygen. Despite his extensive experience, Jamaludin remains active, crediting his continued participation to the joy and passion the sport brings.

The recognition he received from the Malaysia Book of Records in 2014 for the “Jump for World Peace” programme has reignited his dedication. While the Burj Khalifa has been on his wish list for a decade, he admits that the timing for making his dream a reality remains uncertain. Currently, he participates in local events like the Terengganu International Basejump Challenge 2026, where he joined 36 jumpers from 12 countries.
