Asobi Remote Play app lets gamers stream PS4 and PS5 games on the Steam Deck, even without a console — dev breaks PlayStation Plus Premium cloud gaming support free of the PlayStation Portal

The Asobi Remote Play app enables gamers to stream PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games on the Steam Deck without owning a console. Developed by Asobi, a third-party entity, the app grants access to select PlayStation titles from Sony's servers through its cloud gaming service, PlayStation Plus Premium. This capability is exclusive to Asobi's app, unlike the Remote Play and PlayStation Portal tools offered by Sony.

The app is in pre-release playtest on SteamOS and Linux, enabling users to install it on a Steam Deck and virtually transform it into a PlayStation Portal. This eliminates the need to purchase a dedicated $250 device to enjoy PlayStation games without a console. Asobi has already made hundreds of games available through their subscription, so players are unlikely to face difficulty finding something to play.

The free tier of the app supports 1080p at 30FPS, while the premium tier enhances the experience with 1080p at 60FPS, HDR, 4K upscaling, manual bitrate selection, controller haptics, and reduced latency. Currently, these premium features are free during the Steam playtest, though the final pricing has not been disclosed. While the app may face bugs during the early stages, a successful resolution to these issues and Sony's cooperation could make Asobi Remote Play the most accessible method to play PlayStation games on the Steam Deck, aside from native PC ports.
