As DRC confronts largest Ebola outbreak, health agencies revise strategy

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is currently facing its largest Ebola outbreak, with over 4,300 confirmed cases and more than 2,000 deaths as of August 9. This marks the first time in history that the outbreak has surpassed the previous record set during the 2018-20 outbreak, where the country reported around 3,500 confirmed and probable cases over two years.

The current outbreak was declared on May 15 and has rapidly spread, only 12 weeks after its declaration, becoming the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak on record.

Dr. Jean Kaseya, director-general of Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), revealed during an online press briefing on August 6 that the scale of the epidemic highlights the gravity of the situation and necessitates a reevaluation of response strategies to ensure a more effective and coordinated response. The official figures only provide a partial picture of the epidemic's true scale in eastern DRC due to difficult access and operational constraints in remote villages and rural areas.

To effectively tackle the crisis, the World Health Organization and Africa CDC had previously estimated that the DRC would require $1.4 billion for a comprehensive response, encompassing humanitarian efforts. However, the available funding for addressing the outbreak is significantly below this estimated requirement.
