Address stickers and bigger pictures: German ID cards to change in 2027

The German Interior Ministry has announced upcoming changes to the layout and personal data on German ID cards, with a new system set to roll out by 2027. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) discussed these changes with Rheinische Post, highlighting that the method of updating the address on ID cards will undergo modifications.

Traditionally, when people relocate and update their registration at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt), they receive a small sticker with their new address to replace the old one on their ID card. However, as more Bürgerämter digitize the address registration process, the minister anticipates that these stickers will be sent by post starting in 2027.

Additionally, the government is contemplating the possibility of eliminating addresses from ID cards altogether to streamline the procedure. The extent to which these changes will apply to residence permits remains uncertain. Other modifications include enlarging photographs, enhancing existing security features, and incorporating new security measures.

Dobrindt emphasized that the revised cards will boast superior cryptographic protection, ensuring the protection of private data. Furthermore, the cards will feature "data matrix codes," comparable to QR codes, streamlining the process of identity verification. By the conclusion of 2027, all freshly issued ID cards are anticipated to comply with these updated specifications.
