As of July 1, 2024, the so-called ancillary fee for cable-TV usage has officially ended. Despite this, many multi-dwelling units still have a pay-TV setup in their cabinets, even two years later. Vodafone, the successor to Kabel Deutschland, is determined to put an end to this unceremoniously. According to Computer Bild, the report is dated 17/2026.

Vodafone technicians do not require access to the dwelling to perform the shutdown, meaning no specific date for the shutdown needs to be communicated. However, the shutdown will not come without notice. Vodafone has previously attempted to win over pay-TV users with their own contracts over the past years. The company has made sure to draw the attention of affected parties through mailings on the subject.

When a Vodafone technician arrives in a neighborhood, the shutdown of the cable box is imminent. Media lawyer Christian Solmecke told Computer Bild that it is unlikely that tenants will have to pay for the TV usage for the past two years, as there was no contract in place. Therefore, no money can be demanded, and it was an unauthorized service.

Vodafone would have to prove the usage, which cannot be done without measurements. Affected parties should be careful not to confirm anything in writing that could be used as proof of usage. Moreover, if a tenant does not want to sign a contract, they should not be pressured. Vodafone can shut off access, but cannot automatically invoice, according to Solmecke.
