44 dead as ferry capsizes in Zimbabwe

At least 44 individuals lost their lives when an overloaded ferry capsized on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, according to the country's Civil Protection Unit. The accident occurred on Tuesday after the boat, which was reportedly carrying 119 passengers, hit strong waves and overturned. The ferry, which had a capacity of 90 passengers, had been transporting more than its limit when it capsized.

The Civil Protection Unit confirmed that 114 adult passengers and five crew members were accounted for, but cautioned that there may have been unregistered children who were not included in ticket sales.

Rescue efforts were immediately launched, with speedboats, helicopters, underwater search and rescue teams, and local military personnel joining the operation. Maxton Kanhema, a witness, reported that the ferry departed in adverse weather conditions and that a wave may have caused the boat's engines to cease functioning. Kanhema described the scene as distressing, with bodies floating in the water. The Matusadona National Park provided support to the rescue operation, utilizing helicopters, boats, and divers.
