3 states set to hold executions on same day, a first in US since 2010

On Thursday, three states - Tennessee, Alabama, and Oklahoma - are set to carry out lethal injections on the same day, marking the first time in nearly 16 years that three executions will take place simultaneously in the United States. This unusual occurrence comes as a small number of states, including these three, continue to use the death penalty.

Robin Maher, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, noted that while it is highly unusual to have three executions on one day, it is largely a coincidence. In 2025, a total of 47 people were executed in 11 states, the highest number since 2009, with Florida accounting for the majority of the executions at 19.

In Tennessee, Anthony Darrell Hines, 66, is set to be executed after experiencing problems with the IV line during his attempted lethal injection in May. Hines, who has health issues including two strokes, has requested a stay of his execution due to concerns about the doctor overseeing the procedure. However, his requests have been denied, and the state has not specified whether the same doctor will be involved in this upcoming execution.

Alabama will execute Jeremy Williams, 42, for the 2021 rape and murder of a 5-year-old girl. Williams pleaded guilty to the crime and has asked for his death sentence to be carried out. Prosecutors described Williams as someone who left a "trail of destruction of children."

In Oklahoma, Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez, 70, is scheduled to be executed for the 2003 murder of his girlfriend. The Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board voted 3-1 against recommending clemency for Cuesta-Rodriguez, and he has stated that he does not want clemency, though he expressed regret for his actions.
