WTC final race: What India needs to do to qualify for The Oval showdown

The World Test Championship (WTC) final race is intensifying, with Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand dominating the top three spots. India's position is challenging as they trail behind these teams. The final showdown will take place at The Oval. A team earns 12 points for a win, six for a tie, and four for a draw. Points Percentage (PCT) determines the ranking, with deductions for slow over rates.

Australia leads the WTC table with a staggering 87.5% after eight Tests, claiming seven victories and suffering one loss. South Africa trails them closely at 75% from four Tests, while New Zealand rounds off the top three with 72.22% after six Tests. All three top contenders still possess multiple Tests to play.

India faces a daunting climb to join the elite trio. Their chances hinge on an impressive run of results in the forthcoming series against New Zealand and Australia. They have nine Tests remaining, with the first being against Sri Lanka away, followed by New Zealand away, and then a five-Test home series against Australia. The New Zealand series is crucial because it involves a higher-ranked team.

For India to qualify, they need a strong finish, ideally a clean sweep. Winning all nine remaining Tests would propel them to 74.07% PCT. However, even seven wins and two draws would still not guarantee qualification. This is because the final standings will also depend on results involving the other teams.

Bangladesh currently sit at fourth place with 58.33% PCT, after four Tests. They have won two, lost one, and drew one. Though their position is promising, their schedule is challenging with two Tests against Australia and South Africa in the near future.

Teams like Sri Lanka, England, West Indies, and Pakistan are currently outside the main qualification battle. While they are not mathematically out of contention, they would need a strong run of results and favorable outcomes from other teams to keep their chances alive. India, therefore, has a more favorable position than these bottom four teams.
