The ABS will first contact anyone who hasn't responded via a gentle nudge, followed by a written direction if there's no response. Failing to comply could lead to prosecution and a fine of up to $364 per day. Nevertheless, it's crucial to note that providing false or misleading information in the census is also illegal, with a potential fine of up to $3,640.
