Wei Chong-Kai Wun aim to bow out with World Championships medal

KUALA LUMPUR: Present men's doubles duo Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun are striving to conclude their partnership on a high by securing a medal at the World Championships in New Delhi from August 17-23. This could be the final event for the duo, as they are undergoing a reshuffle experiment led by national men's doubles head coach Herry IP.

Wei Chong and his current partner Soh Wooi Yik were defeated by Kai Wun-Yap Roy King for the Korea Masters title on Sunday. Wei Chong emphasized that targeting a title is an unrealistic expectation and stated that winning a medal would be a fitting way to embark on new chapters with other partners. The pair, who have been together for a considerable amount of time, are aware that the World Championships is a significant event and will give their all regardless of their opponents.

They received a bye in the first round but are aware of the potentially challenging second-round match against American world No. 25 Chen Zhi Yi-Presley Smith. After New Delhi, Kai Wun plans to partner Aaron Chia for the Asian Games and World Tour events in October, while Wei Chong is open to a one-off partnership with Aaron Chia at the China Masters on September 1-6.

Wei Chong had some doubts about his performance with Wooi Yik during the last four tournaments due to his recent recovery from a knee injury, but he acknowledges that there were some positives. He is currently focusing on honing his individual skills before the World Championships, which he is set to start training for on Tuesday.
