VRA inspires SHATEC students with career guidance initiative

Last Thursday, the Volta River Authority (VRA) hosted an Employee Volunteer Programme (EVP) at the Shama Technical Institute (SHATEC) in the Western Region, aimed at providing career guidance and mentorship for students. The initiative is part of the VRA's ongoing efforts to inspire academic and career development among students in senior high schools and technical institutions across its operational areas.

Mr Lawrence Quartey, Principal Information and Publicity Officer of the VRA, addressed the students, explaining that the programme aimed to share knowledge and experiences of VRA staff, rather than replace teachers. The EVP has been running since 2013, with similar sessions conducted at Sekondi College and Ahantaman Girls’ Senior High School. The programme exposes students to diverse career opportunities, including those within the power generation sector.

Mr Pope Yaw Yebo, Community Relations Officer of the VRA, emphasized that individuals often set unrealistic goals due to a lack of self-awareness, which can lead to disappointment. The EVP, he explained, seeks to guide students in understanding themselves, the educational system, and potential career pathways, enabling them to make informed choices.

He outlined various career options, such as science, law, engineering, beauty therapy, building technology, hospitality and catering, and encouraged students to identify their strengths and inclinations.

Mr Jacob Brown Yawson, Director of Thermal Generation at the VRA, also spoke to the students, urging them to take advantage of vocational and technical education. He highlighted that many successful individuals in these fields have held influential positions in various institutions across the country. Mr Yawson encouraged the students to pay attention to the guidance provided during the EVP and to remain passionate, disciplined, and responsible in their pursuit of education.

The Principal of SHATEC, Mr Paul Quaysie, praised the VRA for its commitment to corporate social responsibility and community development through this initiative. He emphasized that such partnerships would strengthen technical and vocational education and provide students with additional industry exposure.
