Vice President engages Kayayei association on challenges facing head porters

Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang met with the Kayayei Association on Monday, August 10, 2026, to discuss ways to improve the lives of head porters. The meeting, led by Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, focused on issues such as exploitation, limited access to skills training, and opportunities for sustainable businesses.

The Vice President emphasized that the kayayei issue must be understood within the broader context of migration, inequality, and development, where both "push" and "pull" factors contribute to the movement of people from their communities to urban areas. She stressed that any interventions should be tailored to the needs and aspirations of the women, ensuring that training programs provide the necessary tools, capital, and opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.

The Vice President also expressed concern for the welfare of children living within kayayei communities, calling for stronger measures to protect women from exploitation and create economic opportunities for them. The government reaffirmed its commitment to developing a comprehensive response to the kayayei situation, aiming to create opportunities, strengthen protection, and support vulnerable individuals to reach their full potential.
