UN warns of worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan

The United Nations has issued a stark warning about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The conflict, displacement, insecurity, and funding shortages are contributing to the escalating needs of the Sudanese people.

UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq highlighted the ongoing insecurity around El-Obeid in North Kordofan state, which continues to put civilians at risk and forces more people to flee their homes. Despite ongoing humanitarian aid efforts, such as the provision of two million liters of drinking water to approximately 133,000 people, the situation remains dire.

In West Darfur, fighting has displaced around 18,000 individuals from more than 20 villages. Moreover, a funding crisis in Central Darfur has resulted in the closure of three health facilities, leaving approximately 75,000 displaced persons without access to essential health services. The United Nations has reiteratively called on all parties involved in the conflict to safeguard civilians and ensure humanitarian access.

However, despite these appeals, only 41% of the $2.9 billion required for Sudan's humanitarian appeal has been funded.
