Ukraine Strikes Major Russian Oil Refinery Deep Inside Russia

On Tuesday, Aug. 11, Ukrainian forces launched a strike against the Orsknefteorgsintez oil refinery, located deep within Russia's Orenburg Oblast. The attack, which caused a fire at the facility situated over 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) from the Ukrainian border, targeted one of Russia's major oil-processing plants capable of handling up to 6 million metric tons of crude oil annually. The refinery produces gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, fuel oil, and bitumen, playing a crucial role in Russia's energy infrastructure.

The Ukrainian military reported that the full extent of the damage was still being evaluated following the drone attack. This incident occurred in the wake of earlier explosions reported in Orsk early Tuesday morning. Ukrainian and Russian accounts indicated that a fire broke out at the refinery in response to the drone assault. Russian authorities subsequently imposed temporary restrictions on air traffic in the vicinity.

The Orsknefteorgsintez refinery had previously faced drone strikes, including one in April 2026. This latest attack was part of a larger Ukrainian operation conducted overnight, targeting Russian military and energy infrastructure across occupied Crimea and southern Ukraine. The operation reportedly involved strikes on 43 locations, encompassing Russian military logistics facilities, ammunition and supply depots, energy infrastructure, and other military assets.

Ukrainian forces also claimed to have destroyed a Russian Buk-M3 air defense system and targeted a vessel from Russia's so-called shadow fleet in the Black Sea; however, these claims have not been independently verified.

The Orsknefteorgsintez refinery is situated in Orsk, Russia's Orenburg Oblast, near the country's border with Kazakhstan. As an integral part of Russia's energy infrastructure, the facility processes crude oil into various petroleum products.
