UK to get best eclipse since 1999 as Moon blocks out Sun across Europe

On Wednesday evening, the UK will witness its most spectacular solar eclipse since 1999, and potentially the best it will see for the next 50 years. The celestial event will be visible across the entire UK, with up to 96% of the Sun's disc obscured by the Moon, depending on the observer's location. In certain areas, like Devon, Cornwall, and the western parts of Pembrokeshire in Wales, the eclipse will reach its fullest, with 94-96% of the Sun obscured.

In contrast, other regions such as Northern Ireland, parts of the West Midlands, South West, and western Scotland will experience 92-94% solar coverage.

The UK's weather conditions are mixed; while much of the country may enjoy clear skies, some areas in north Wales, northern England, and particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland could encounter cloud cover and even rain between 18:00 and 19:00 BST. However, those in Spain can expect clear skies, with total eclipse visibility in cities like Bilbao, Valencia, and Palma de Mallorca. Barcelona and Madrid will see over 99% coverage.

Julie, who traveled from Brest, France, to Burgos, Spain, expressed her excitement about witnessing the total eclipse in person. She noted that seeing such a marvellous sight is a worthwhile investment, even if it means spending money on an extraordinary natural phenomenon. Martin Griffith, director of Brecon Beacons Observatory, described the eclipse as "one of the great phenomena of nature," emphasizing the beauty of the total eclipse in Spain, where people will experience about a minute and 40 seconds of totality.

The next total solar eclipse visible over the British Isles won't occur until 2081, while the following total solar eclipse in the UK will take place in 2090. To safely view the eclipse, viewers should use certified solar glasses or create a pinhole viewer, with the safest method involving a 3mm hole in paper projecting the image onto another piece of white paper.
