UK ‘on course’ to record warmest summer for second year in a row

Britain is on track to set its warmest summer on record for a second consecutive year, according to the UK Met Office. As of August 10, the average temperature for the summer season, from June 1 to August 10, has already reached 16.48°C. The Met Office predicts that the country will surpass its record-set in the previous year, which experienced a mean temperature of 16.1°C. Only normal weather conditions during the remaining days of August are required for Britain to officially break this summer record.

Last summer, Britain endured its hottest summer on record, with an average temperature of 16.1°C, which surpassed the previous record of 15.76°C set in 2018. Currently, the Met Office reports that the summer's average temperature stands at 16.48°C, further indicating the likelihood of another record-breaking summer.

Met senior scientist Mike Kendon commented on the statistics, stating that they serve as a clear reminder of the drastic changes in the UK's climate. These statistics highlight the significant impact of high temperatures and low rainfall on the country, with almost three-quarters of England and all of Wales experiencing drought conditions.

England and Wales also recorded their driest July ever this year. Scientists attribute these extreme weather events, such as heatwaves and droughts, to the intensifying effects of climate change, which are resulting in records being broken more frequently. Heatwaves and record temperatures in May and June disrupted schools, transportation, and hospitals, leading to an estimated 2,877 excess deaths in England, nearly double the total number of deaths during the entire summer of 2025.
