Turkey passes law to dissolve PKK militant group

Parliament in Turkey has recently voted to dissolve the militant Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) group, granting amnesty to its members. Out of 562 MPs present, 468 voted in favor of the proposal. This legislation formalizes the disbandment of the group, which has been engaged in a 40-year conflict with the Turkish state. The conflict resulted in the deaths of at least 40,000 people and spilled over into neighboring Syria and Iraq, leaving a profound impact on Turkish society.

Turkey considers the PKK its primary national security threat and has designated it as a terrorist organization alongside the EU and US.

The violent conflict concluded when jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan called for its dissolution and disarmament last year. However, the process of disarming all affiliates of the PKK, located in Kurdish-majority areas within Syria, Turkey, Iran, and Iraq, is complex. Some PKK leaders based in northern Iraq's Qandil mountains agreed to dissolve the organization and held a symbolic weapons-burning ceremony.

Ocalan's release, which would be part of the dissolution process, is highly unpopular in Turkey as he is seen as responsible for the deaths of thousands of soldiers and civilians. Additionally, thousands of others are serving prison sentences for their alleged connections to the PKK. Established in 1984 to create an independent Kurdish state, the PKK also sought legal recognition and improved rights for the Kurds, who comprise one in five people in Turkey.
