Trump Promises Cheeseburger to Robert Gilman, Marine Released From Russia

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Robert Gilman, a former U.S. Marine, has been released from Russian custody and is returning to the United States, citing the Kremlin's agreement to free him on humanitarian grounds after discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Gilman, a Massachusetts resident, had been detained since 2022, accused of assaulting a police officer during a train incident in Voronezh.

However, Gilman's family disputes the allegations, claiming he became ill during the encounter and did not intentionally harm the officer. According to a supporters' website, Gilman was in Russia for a teaching job when his health deteriorated, leading to his arrest. He has since been diagnosed with pneumonia and a dissociative stupor, prompting advocacy group Global Reach to seek his release.

Gilman's release comes after concerns over his health, with Senator Ed Markey describing him as "essentially catatonic" before his release. Despite repeated calls to the Russian authorities, Gilman's release appears to have broader geopolitical implications, potentially aimed at altering U.S.-Russia relations and encouraging Ukraine's concessions in the ongoing conflict.

While celebrating Gilman's release, Global Reach urges the administration to continue pressing for the return of other detained Americans, as five others remain in Russian custody.
