Trump floats possible legal challenge to New York tax on luxury second homes

On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his displeasure with New York over a proposed tax on luxury second homes in the city, which he once called his residence. Trump labeled the so-called pied-a-terre tax as a dangerous leftist experiment that he believes could be challenged by the federal government. The tax, already contested in state court, saw a Staten Island judge temporarily halt its implementation on Monday.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani vowed to defend the city's stance in court, indicating a willingness to take legal action against the proposed tax. Despite a history of disagreements on policy matters, Trump and Mamdani have met in person twice, with their first encounter being unexpectedly cordial. During the meeting, Trump criticized Democrats, referring to the administration of New York's first Muslim mayor as Radical Left Jihadists.

Trump's opposition to the pied-a-terre tax stems from his belief that it could potentially deter federal involvement in averting what he perceives as a looming disaster. The tax is projected to generate $500 million annually for the city, making it a significant source of revenue for New York City.
