In 1966, North Korea's Rodong Sinmun newspaper announced a new policy of juche, or self-reliance, in an editorial, claiming ideological independence from the Soviet Union and China.

In 1971, South Korea's National Red Cross proposed a joint initiative with its North Korean counterpart to reunite separated families on the Korean Peninsula. However, despite initial discussions a year later, an agreement was not reached. The family reunion project was finally realized in 2000, during a summit between President Kim Dae-jung and North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, who agreed to hold the humanitarian event regularly.

President Kim Young-sam implemented a real-name financial system in 1993 to combat corruption, eliminating transactions under false or borrowed names and mandating the use of real names for bank accounts and stock purchases. This policy was intended to eliminate opportunities for money laundering and tax evasion.

In 1999, friendly football matches were organized between workers from South and North Korea in Pyongyang, the North's capital.

In 2002, South and North Korea held their seventh round of ministerial talks in Seoul.

Notable figures from South Korea, such as fashion designer Andre Kim, who passed away in 2021, and former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who granted special pardons to nearly 1,700 individuals in 2022, including Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong and Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin, have also made historical impacts during this time.
