This is no case for junior lawyers – Atta Akyea explains why he must defend Adu-Boahene

Samuel Atta Akyea, the attorney representing Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former National Signals Bureau Director-General, has staunchly defended his decision to personally handle his client's defense. The case has drawn considerable attention due to its potential impact on national security. Adu-Boahene is currently embroiled in criminal proceedings connected to his time at the NSB.

Akyea emphasized that the case is not suitable for junior lawyers, given its unique challenges and implications. He highlighted that national security matters have never been the subject of an open trial in Ghana's history, making the trial an unprecedented undertaking. The lawyer expressed his reluctance to delegate the defense to another member of his team, stating that his client's case demands the "experience and gravitas" only he can provide.

Akyea also criticized the selective nature of justice, questioning why some criminal cases receive expedited attention while others remain unresolved. He cited pending murder, manslaughter, and rape cases as examples of what he perceives as an uneven application of justice. Despite the gravity of the situation, Akyea insisted that he has earned the right to personally manage his client's defense and would not allow a single case to undermine established legal practices in Ghana.
