Tanzania’s CNG Push Gains a Homegrown Champion in Energo

Tanzania is pushing for a transition from petrol to compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, driven by the country's abundant natural gas reserves. CNG costs roughly half the price of petrol, and a conversion typically pays for itself within 12 to 18 months of driving. However, the upfront cost of converting a vehicle has been a major obstacle to adoption.

Energo Tanzania, a Dar es Salaam-based firm operating a CNG station and converting petrol vehicles to run on gas, has found a solution by partnering with two of the country's largest banks, Equity Bank and CRDB Bank. These partnerships allow drivers to finance their conversions through loans, spreading the cost over time and repaying it using their fuel savings. This market-based approach tackles the biggest barrier to adoption and is a more scalable model for a country with tight household budgets.

By February 2026, about 15,000 vehicles had been converted to CNG nationwide, up from around 5,000 reported in January 2025. This represents a tripling in just over a year, demonstrating the growing appeal of CNG vehicles. The trend is accelerating, driven by the lower cost of CNG and the savings drivers can achieve by switching to compressed natural gas.
