Syria's Kurds demonstrate in multiple cities, government announces curfew

The Syrian city of Kobani, also known as Ayn al-Arab, placed itself under a curfew on Monday night after Kurdish protesters targeted several government-affiliated locations, according to the country's Internal Security Department. The curfew was imposed due to concerns for citizen safety and to maintain security and stability following unrest in multiple Kurdish areas.

Reports from Israeli media indicate that Kurds in Kobani burned a Syrian flag in front of a government office in Aleppo. In multiple cities, including Hasakah and Qamishli, groups attacked internal security headquarters, removed the flag of the Syrian Arab Republic, and damaged internal security vehicles, according to the Hasakah Media Directorate. The attacks were carried out by groups outside the law, causing tension and unrest in the region.

In response to the attacks, internal security forces reinforced their presence in the two cities to control the security situation and protect citizens and their property. The Kurds have a complex relationship with Syria's new leadership, which took power following the loss of authority by President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. Since then, tensions between the government and minority groups have increased, with serious attacks occurring on ethnic and national minorities.
