Student shooting threat causes panic at Montfort College

On August 11, 2026, Montfort College in Chiang Mai experienced a spike in security after a student allegedly posted a threatening message on a Line chat group. The incident was widely reported by reporters, with students' names replaced by pseudonyms to maintain anonymity. A thread within the chat group showcased a Glock 19 handgun clearly visible from the driver's seat of a car, sparking alarm among the community.

Messages in the chat group detailed plans to conduct a shooting, with one student mentioning specific individuals they intended to target, such as the "eldest son" and the "head chef." Other students, including "Cat" and "Tree," engaged in discussions about coordinating the attack, with a plan to start from the student affairs office and move building by building. One student even offered to record the event, exacerbating the situation.

The Montfort College community responded with concern, with some parents contacting the school to collect their children. The school, following protocol, coordinated with the Mae Ping Police Station, which sent around 20 officers to inspect the campus. Upon investigation, it was determined that the students responsible had sent the threatening messages out of mischief and by imitating an online trend, without the intention of actually carrying out the plan.

In response to the incident, the school conducted an extensive security check on August 11, inspecting students, teachers, and personnel at the entrance. Additionally, classrooms were monitored, and students were educated on safety procedures, including recognizing warning signs, taking shelter, and responding in case of violence.

The school assured parents that the situation has returned to normal and that parents concerned for their children's safety could request their children to take a leave of absence if necessary.
