Steve and Connie Ballmer are splitting their $8 billion philanthropy into three so the people closest to the work can decide how the money is spent

Steve and Connie Ballmer, the former Microsoft CEO and his wife, have decided to split their $8 billion philanthropy into three separate entities. This change aims to give local leaders more control over how the money is spent. The Ballmer Group, founded in 2015, will transform its three regional offices into independent nonprofits named MoveUp Southeast Michigan, MoveUp LA, and MoveUp Washington.

These organizations will continue to receive funding from the Ballmers but will operate autonomously. Each new philanthropy has personal significance to the couple, such as Steve's upbringing in the Southeast Michigan region and the Ballmers owning the Los Angeles Clippers. Their ultimate goal is to empower local leaders and build more permanent resources in each region while the Ballmers concentrate their efforts on national initiatives for economic mobility.
