Startup B3IQ has found a new AI niche: Supplying rent-to-own machines to privacy-conscious university researchers

PhD student Pavel Bushuyeu at the University of Hawaii, who researches skin cancer in Pacific Islanders, faced challenges accessing university's limited compute resources and privacy concerns when using external pay-per-hour services. He discovered B3 Labs, a startup offering dedicated GPU hardware through rent-to-own program called B3IQ.

Customers can pay 30% down on machines, including Nvidia H200 rigs starting at $54,516, and spread out remaining payments over five years. The option is beneficial due to predictable costs and privacy compliance with health laws like HIPAA. B3IQ, founded by Daryl Xu, Viktoriya Hying and Sean Geng, initially focused on video games but pivoted to AI after discovering GPU chip demand.

The startup offers customers the option to host machines at their own premises or at their Oregon facility. B3IQ has secured $21 million in funding from Pantera and Coinbase Ventures and aims for $50 million in revenue this year.
