South Africa wants to use machine learning to screen travellers for fraud

South Africa is implementing a digital visa system, the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which will utilize machine learning, biometrics, and facial recognition to control who enters the country. The system, set to launch at OR Tambo International Airport, aims to strengthen border security while making travel faster, simpler, and more secure for legitimate travellers.

Since May, the system has processed over 203,000 applications and rejected more than 5,500 fraudulent ones through machine learning technology. The ETA requires applicants to submit biometric data and provides automated passport control at the border. While the technology addresses formal border processing, it cannot prevent unauthorized crossings through other means such as rivers or Kruger National Park.

The initiative has been met with both support and opposition, with some people protesting against undocumented migration and others voicing concerns about potential human rights violations.
