Snowfall eases as E Cape Transport reopens most mountain passes

The Eastern Cape witnessed the closure of several crucial mountain passes due to heavy snowfall, leaving travelers stranded and raising safety concerns. On Monday, five high-altitude routes were shut: Barkly Pass (R58), Penhoek Pass (N6), Boesmanshoek Pass (N6), Qashas Nek Pass (between Matatiele and Lesotho), and Lootsberg Pass (N9). Authorities advised motorists to steer clear of these closed roads, heed signage, and heed instructions from traffic and emergency personnel.

By late afternoon, Penhoek and Lootsberg passes were reopened after snow removal crews cleared the roads. However, Barkly and Boesmanshoek remained closed, with conditions still deemed hazardous. Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose warned motorists to exercise extreme caution on alternate routes, advising them to use the N9/N6 via the R61 to Nxuba before rejoining the N10.

He cautioned of unpredictable winter weather, emphasizing the need for drivers to reduce speed and increase following distances.

By Tuesday morning, snowfall had ceased, allowing all previously closed passes to reopen. Yet, Binqose emphasized that conditions remained perilous, citing thick fog on Penhoek Pass and low-lying areas experiencing cold weather, steady rainfall, and mist. He reiterated the importance of cautious driving: "Slow down, increase following distances and switch on your headlights."

No major weather-related accidents were reported overnight. Binqose expressed gratitude for motorists' patience and cooperation, urging them to adhere to safety guidelines as the cold snap persisted. Emergency teams remained on standby across the province, monitoring conditions and providing assistance where required. Travelers were advised to plan ahead, reduce speed, and prioritize safety as the Eastern Cape continued to grapple with the cold weather.
