Singapore's upgraded economic outlook a 'bullish signal' of AI-driven expansion, but other sectors also contributing: Experts

Singapore has elevated its GDP growth forecast for 2026 to a range of 4.5% to 5.5%, signaling optimism about the economy's growth potential driven by the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, according to several economists. The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) cited better-than-expected performance in the first half of 2026 and anticipated acceleration in global AI-related capital expenditure as key factors contributing to this upward revision in the forecast.

While the AI boom is a major growth driver, experts emphasize that Singapore's economy remains diversified, with other sectors like construction, finance, and information and communications also contributing to overall growth. Despite the optimism surrounding AI, economists caution that the economy is not overly dependent on technology, as supply disruptions from the Middle East conflict pose challenges to certain manufacturing sectors, including chemicals.

Furthermore, dampened consumer sentiments and inflationary pressures may weigh on the retail trade and food and beverage services sectors. However, economists remain confident in Singapore's economic expansion, citing robust growth in the second quarter and supportive factors such as AI investment, domestic construction activity, and safe haven capital inflows.
