Silent Hill Creature Designer Responds To Madonna Fans After Music Video Inspiration Remarks Spark Backlash

Silent Hill creature designer and illustrator Masahiro Ito is defending himself against criticism from Madonna fans following a comment he made about one of her music videos. Ito is responsible for creating many iconic monsters from the first three Silent Hill games, including the Bubble Head Nurses and Pyramid Head. In May 2019, he discussed how the dancers in Madonna's 1999 music video for "Nothing Really Matters" inspired the nurses' movements in the game.

However, in May 2026, he clarified that he was not referring to Madonna herself or her song, but rather the Butoh-like dances performed by Asian dancers in the video. Despite his clarification, the statement sparked backlash from a vocal group of Madonna fans who interpreted his comment as a criticism of the singer. Ito attempted to clarify his intentions time and again, but the criticism continued.
