Sidra Medicine, The View Hospital partner to expand access to cord blood banking services

Sidra Medicine, a part of Qatar Foundation, has teamed up with The View Hospital to make cord blood banking services more available to expecting families in Qatar. This collaboration broadens access to one of the country's most sophisticated cord blood banking programs, enabling parents to store their newborn's stem cells for potential use in the future.

After collection, blood samples are transported to Sidra Medicine's Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facility, where they undergo processing, testing, and long-term cryogenic storage in accordance with internationally recognized quality standards. Cord blood holds stem cells that can be utilized to treat various blood, immune, and genetic disorders, with ongoing research into their potential for regenerative medicine for conditions like cerebral palsy, autism, and type 1 diabetes.

Collecting cord blood is a simple, risk-free process performed after the umbilical cord is clamped and cut and can only be done once during a baby's birth. Integrating cord blood banking into the maternity pathway gives families enhanced access to advanced healthcare options and supports informed decision-making during pregnancy. The GMP facility at Sidra Medicine is the sole facility in Qatar offering local cord blood storage, ensuring samples maintain optimal quality and are readily available when needed.

The GMP facility also processes bone marrow stem cells for transplantation and develops advanced cell and gene therapy products for pediatric treatments at the hospital.
