Selangor seawater desalination plant feasibility study due by December

SHAH ALAM, Aug 11 — Selangor's state government is conducting a feasibility study on a seawater desalination plant to be completed by December, according to Datuk Izham Hashim, chairman of the State Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee. Central Spectrum (M) Sdn Bhd, in collaboration with Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor), has appointed a consultant to conduct the six-month study.

The study will evaluate the technical, economic, and environmental aspects of the project, as well as its overall feasibility. The cost of the project is lower than previously estimated, and the cost of solar systems has become competitive. Potential locations for the plant, identified along the eastern coastline of Pulau Indah, will be finalized based on the study's findings.

The current treated water production by Air Selangor is 5,450 million litres per day (MLD), while water supply demand is projected to increase to 9,653 MLD by 2045. The government is exploring alternative water supply sources to ensure a sustainable and reliable water supply for Selangor.
