Security stepped up, anti-terror ops launched ahead of Independence Day in J&K

Security agencies intensified their efforts in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) as the region prepared for Independence Day celebrations, launching multiple anti-militancy operations and bolstering security measures. Authorities reported launching an anti-militancy operation in Poonch’s Mendhar Sector after a security guard noticed suspicious movements near an under-construction tunnel.

Security forces cordoned off jungle areas in Bhata Dhurian and Sangiot following the incident. In the Chenab Valley, security forces initiated another anti-terror operation after locals reported terrorist movement in the upper reaches, specifically in Ramtund area of Bhaderwah, Doda. Acting on reports of four suspected terrorists in the area, security forces launched a search operation to locate the alleged terrorists.

In the Kashmir Valley, security forces stepped up frisking, searches of vehicles, and market inspections throughout the day. Major markets in Srinagar, such as Lal Chowk, experienced heightened security measures with searches of hotels and shops. A purported online threat targeting Kashmiri Pandits prompted the police to grant leave to affected individuals until August 20.

The J&K Police were investigating the online threats, which were believed to originate from a cross-border source. Inspector General of Police for the Kashmir Zone, V.K. Birdi, assessed the security situation in Srinagar, reviewing the multi-layered security arrangements in place for the main Independence Day parade scheduled for August 15.

Birdi emphasized that security measures extended beyond the parade venue, covering the entire Srinagar city and all districts of the Valley.

Birdi also acknowledged the recent twin targeted killings of a policeman and two non-locals since July 22, stating that these incidents were being investigated and deemed appropriate to disclose.
